Can you use a mini crib as a bassinet?

Table of Contents

A crib is a bed or cot for a child that has bars or a lattice around it to keep the child safe. It is a small bed frame for a child with high sides. Cribs usually come in two sizes: 36-43 inches long for a mini crib, which is the same length as a standard crib and has a width of about 28 inches; and 53 inches long for a standard crib, which is the same width as a mini crib and has a thickness of about 4 to 6 inches. So now the question that might pop in mind, is: “Can you use a mini crib as a bassinet?”. Let’s find out in today’s article!

What is a mini crib?

Simply put, as explained in the last sentence, a mini crib is a smaller version of a standard crib, which seems to be made in a more traditional way. A mini crib is likely about four inches smaller and 14 inches shorter than a standard crib. Even though a mini crib can be the same height as a full-size standard crib, the mini crib is still smaller than a standard crib. This is because the size difference between cribs is reasonable and makes sense.

 What is a bassinet?

Right away, a bassinet/bassinette, which could be like a cradle, has a basket-like shape and has walls like cribs, but they are much smaller and are made for babies who have just been born and are no more than four months old. Most bassinets have a hood to protect the baby’s head from too much light, bugs, or anything else that might bother the baby.

A bassinet is smaller than a crib and can hold a baby for the first few months after birth. Most likely, modern bassinets will have a fixed frame that can also rock from side to side. Most bassinet frames are made of wood, wicker, plastic, or metal, and they have fixed legs that stand on their own. It takes up less room and can often be moved around the house to suit the mother’s needs. It’s also cheaper to buy than a mini crib. Most baby bassinets are lighter and easier to move from room to room. In almost all cases, they are probably portable. Now that we know the differences between a mini crib and a bassinet, the question is: can you use a mini crib as a bassinet?

Can you use a mini crib as a bassinet?

Remember that a mini crib is bigger and takes up more space than a bassinet; a mini crib can be used for a long time because it doesn’t have an age limit like a bassinet; babies can sleep in both a mini crib and a bassinet, but a toddler can sleep in a mini crib but not in a bassinet; and a mini crib is more expensive than a bassinet, which is easier to use.

For putting a baby to sleep, a mini crib can be used as a bassinet. This is not because of the style or complexity of the cradle or cot, but because of the baby’s need to sleep. Both the mini crib and the bassinet have different qualities. A bassinet has a more comfortable or softer bed for the baby, while a mini crib has a bed with a slightly harder surface so that the baby can grow into it.

Final words

Before you decide to use a mini crib or bassinet in your home, there are a few important things to think about. You should think about how much space you have to put the mini crib or bassinet for your baby, how much money you have, and how old your baby is to make sure the type of cot or cradle is right for him or her. Your baby can still sleep well in a bassinet or a mini crib as long as you make it a comfortable place to nest (read here about sharing a crib).

By now, you should be an expert on this matter and be able to answer to the question: “Can you use a mini crib as a bassinet?”.
